First 10 sentences of one vignette
The sun is in my face and I can feel the beginning of a sunburn on my skin as I pull my sleeves down. I rip the name-tag with 'AILLY' scribbled in messy handwriting off my new shirt as I trudge down the road to my new home. Pulling my bleached blonde hair back into a ponytail in frustration, I go over all the bad things that I'd done. The only problem is, I'd done nothing. I was perfect. The perfect, typical, American teenager. I'd gone blonde, I got braces and now have perfect teeth, I'm more tan than I've ever been, and my fingers graze my thighs as my arms swing at my sides. My thoughts, however, are rudely interrupted as a white ball collides with my face.

Code - Cry, the Beloved Country

Jarvis sat, deeply moved. Whether because this was his son, whether because this was almost the last act of his son, he could not say. Whether because there was some quality in the words, that too he could not say, for he had given little time in his life to the savouring and judging of words. Whether because there was some quality in the ideas, that too he could not say, for he had given little time to study of these particular matters. He rose and went up the stairs to his room, and was glad to find his wife not there, for here was a sequence not to be interrupted. He picked up the Abraham Lincoln and went down to the study again, and there opened the book at the Second Inaugural Address of the great president. He read it through, and felt with a sudden lifting of the spirit that here was a secret unfolding, a track picked up again. There was increasing knowledge of a stranger. He began to understand why the picture of this man was in the house of his son, and the multitude of books.

Journal #4

Patron develops Gender roles in Cry, the Beloved Country by having the men be the breadwinners and women be housewives and caretakers of the men. Women are looked down upon and are useless save for raising a child or cleaning. Men are required to be intelligent and run the government, take care of the women and take care of their families. Due to these differences it is very difficult for women to get jobs and when they do they aren't ideal. For example, Stephan's sister took her child and went looking for her husband and ended up a prostitute who also makes hard liquor to support herself and her son. On the other hand, Stephan's brother went to the same town and ended up a high ranking politician.

The Power of One and Lord of the Flies are similar in many aspects but the placement of power also differs in some ways. For example, in The Power of One at the boarding school the Nazi boy took charge through sheer brute force and age difference from the other boys; this is very similar to what Jack did in Lord of the Flies, the only difference being that in LOTF power was split between both Jack and Ralph. Jack took almost full control by bribing those that were on Ralph's side or terrifying them; the Nazi boy maintained control through fear as well. He made the younger boys fearful of him by killing the chicken and nearly killing the little blonde boy. The power structures are both destroyed when a new, stronger, power structure appears. The reoccurring power structure being the one that adults set up.

"This was fascinating to Henry... He became absorbed beyond mere happiness." (p.56)
Henry is curiosity, order, innocence and youth. He is protected by memories of parents, authority and the law. When Roger threw rocks at Henry he missed purposefully, not actually wanting to hurt the boy because even though he was jealous of Henry's innocence and the way he saw the world Roger was afraid of hurting him. Henry is a reminder that even within chaos there is always some light that remains unhindered.

"They knew very well why he hadn't: because of the enormity of the knife descending and cutting into living flesh; ... He snatched his knife out of the sheath and slammed it into a tree trunk. Next time there would be no mercy."
( pg.38)
William Golding's use of foreshadowing makes the reader wonder if there will be a 'next time'; which draws them into the story further and keeps them guessing. As it turns out, there are multiple 'next time's. Jack will eventually go on to order the tribal dance that kills Simon. When the tribal dance ends and the boys realize they've killed Simon the reader remembers Jack's initial encounter with death and how he hesitated. Yet, after Simon and Piggy's deaths Jack throws a spear at Ralph; all value for human life is essentially gone and the boys have descended into chaos.
